Nur Hayat is a software engineer who began working with Rohingya Culture Center in 2016 to serve the community. As a volunteer, she worked closely with community members who faced language barriers, to ensure that they overcome the hurdles and find appropriate resources. She found the work to be incredibly rewarding to help Rohingya community members navigate complex processes and access resources available. She also served as the supervisor for a children’s after-school program that was run by the Center. Over the course of six years, she worked closely with children within the community, helping them with their homework, leading educational activities, and providing mentorship and support that they need. Nurhayat is also a co-founder and the director of youth empowerment and digital literacy at the Rohingya Maìyafuìnor Collaborative Network, which is a women-led, Rohingya-led and refugee-led organization working on Rohingya human rights issues, SGBV, education and translocal solidarity with a focus on women, peace and security.
Overall, working with the Rohingya Culture Center organization allowed her to make a meaningful impact in the lives of the individuals and families that she worked with. It has inspired her to continue seeking out opportunities to give back to her community especially in advocacy.
